AMERICAN FAMILY MEMBERS

FIRST GENERATION

Henry Jackson was born in 1606 in London England. Henry's mother was Annie Hobson who was born in 1582. Annie was the daughter of Henry Hobson and Alice Davis. Henry Jackson's father's first name is believed to be Thomas. He was born in 1578. Henry's parents were apparently married in 1600 in Somersetshire, England. Henry had 2 brothers, Thomas who was born in 1604 and John who was born in 1608. He came from England aboard the Elizabeth & Ann to Watertown, Mass. leaving London on Apr. 13 1635. He was 29 years old at the time having taken an oath of allegiance and supremacy to the crown and bought a certificate from the minister and Justice of the Peace in the place that he resided in England, of his conformity to the Church of England and that he was no subsidy man. Henry was lessee of fishing rights in Watertown. He moved to Fairfield Cf. and agreed to build a tide mill on Feb. 2, 1648 or 1649. This was the first tide mill in America. He bought land from Thomas Wheeler of Fairfield on June 16 1650 and erected the mill on it. He sold the mill to Samuel Morehouse in 1653. He moved to Pequonnock and purchased the house and home lot of Thomas Wheeler Jr. He was made a freeman on Oct. 10 1669 and was one of the dividend land holders of the town. Henry and another townsman were commissioned by Fairfield to lay out the boundaries of the town. These were expanded a few years later by other townsmen. Henry died on Sept. 22 1686 in Fairfield Cf. at 80 years of age. Henry had 5 children, John, Hannah, Moses, Samuel, and Joseph.

NOTE:

There is some debate as to the name of Henry's wife. Some believe it to be Mary Abbott, the daughter of George Abbott. Others say that is impossible. The writer feels that Henry may have been married twice. The first marriage being to Hannah Swift, the mother of his children. The second marriage was to Mary Abbott who would have been too young to have been the mother of Henry's children.

NOTE:

The foundation for the mill that Henry Jackson built in Fairfield has been recently uncovered. It was situated on a stream, running into the west side of the Uncoway River.

John Jackson was born in 1608 in London England. He came to America with his brother Henry aboard the Elizabeth & Ann in 1635. John was 27 years old at the time. John was listed as a carpenter so Henry may have been one also. This would explain Henry agreeing to build a tide mill. John's wife was named Abigail. It is believed that John and Abigail settled in Salem Mass. Their known children were Sarah, Hannah, Peter, Mary, and Benjamin.

NOTE:

The above John Jackson constitutes a separate line. There is at this time no knowledge of any of Henry’s brother John Jackson's descendants by the writer.
