Sep 1768, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA Nicholas died Apr 1762, Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA. The origins of Nicholas remain a mystery. He does not appear in any colonial record prior to 1713. Perhaps he was a mariner who became acquainted with the Everton family. Some speculate that he was a son of John Hume, a seaman to the ill-fated Darien Colony in Panama. After marriage to Joanna he disappears. He may have removed to RI or gone to sea. In 1719 he appears in Mendon, MA as the spouse of Margaret. Joanna: She came from a prominent shipping family. Her father was a mariner and two paternal uncles, John and Samuel were sea captains. She was orphaned ca. 1695 and a maternal uncle, Richard Sprague, was appointed guardian. He too was originally a sea captain but later served in the General Court. He was a prominent man of the day and on his death in 1703 left part of his estate to Harvard College. Nicholas and Joanna were married in the historic Old North Church known throughout the world for its relationship to Paul Revere's famous ride in April, 1775. Margaret: The surname of Margaret is unknown. It has been speculated that she was a daughter of Samuel Read but that was disproven in an examination of his will. Dorcas: She was the widow of John Williams of Dedham. She had four children by that marriage. Her great-grandmother was Sarah Eliot, sister to the Indian Apostle, John Eliot.
