Descendants of William Fairchild
Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM1 FAIRCHILD was born 1590 in England,
and died in Devonshire, England.
He married SUSAN 1609.
Notes for WILLIAM FAIRCHILD:
The following account of Thomas comes from William H
Wilcoxson's HISTORY OF STRATFORD. The year Thomas came to America
is not known, nor is it known if he married in England
or in America.
He was among those families who first settled at the site of Stratford
in 1638/1639. He was a Deputy from Stratford
to the General Court and served eleven sessions from April 1646 to October
1665. In those days the office of Commissioner was similar to that of the
elected Justice of the Peace of today, and Thomas served in this capacity more
than once. After the death of his first wife, he journeyed to London,
where he married again. The pre-nuptial agreement shows that he executed a
bond, providing the bride with a life estate in his lands and a sum of 200
pounds to be paid to her if he died before arrival in New England.
The contract was never carried out and was settled after his death by the
General Court, ordering the money be paid. The estate was valued at 350 pounds.
The Stratford land records give the
settlement. On May 16, 1677
Mrs Katherine Judson, by virtue of a contract with Mr Thomas Fairchild, late
deceased, by the consent of the General Court of Connecticut, "hath a
dwelling house, barn, orchard, and homelot of two acres". Thomas' will,
written a week before his death, named the children of his first wife and wife
Katherine, but did not include her children. A footnote in the Colonial Records
II gives the following additional facts: "a copy of the marriage contract
between Thomas Fairchild of Stratford,
merchant, and Catherine Craigg, a sister of Elizabeth Whiting, widow of London,
Executed in England,
December 22, 1662". The ceremony was performed in St Stephens Church in London.
That Church has long since burned and never been rebuilt.
It seems to generally accepted that
Thomas sailed for America
from Barnstable, Devonshire,
England, although there
is no concrete evidence confirming this. Sources vary as to the birthplace of
Thomas - Kent and Wingrave in Bucks, High Laver in Essex, Barnstoble, and
Cambridgeshire. Charles E Banks in his book, "Topographical Dictionary of
2,885 English Emigrants to New England 1620 - 1650"
lists Thomas Fairchild as coming from High Laver in Essex
to Stratford, CT.
There are no parish records of this period, according to the vicar in 1985. The
vicar explained that many times the records were considered the property of the
presiding minister, who would take them with him when he left the parish. The
Essex Record Office in Chelmsford
could not verify Bank's claim. There was a Thomas Fairchild and wife in High
Laver, but at a date to be the Thomas in question. About the time of 1610, when
Thomas of Stratford was probably born, there were found in the IGI four Thomas
Fairchild's: Thomas, son of Willyam and Alce Fairchild, baptized Feb 14, 1608
at Orwell in Cambridge; Thomas, son of George and Elizabeth and Alce Fairchild,
baptized Sept 17, 1609 in Orwell; Thomas, son of Alexander Fayrchild, baptized
July 10, 1614 in Wendy cum Shingay in Cambridge; and Thomas, son of William
Fairchilde, baptized 14 Sept 1616, Plymouth Street, Andrew, Devonshire. The
siblings of these Thomases bore none of the names of the children of Thomas of
Stratford, CT, but his sons used the names of Robert, Alexander, Mary, and
Anne, names found among the siblings of the four Thomases. The likelihood is
that Thomas was born in Cambridge.
The parish of Wendy cum Shingay is in the southwest part of Cambridge,
bordering on Hertfordshire where the Seabrooks lived. Orwell is close by.
Child of WILLIAM FAIRCHILD and SUSAN is:
2. i. THOMAS2 FAIRCHILD, b. Abt. 1610, High Laver,
England; d. December 14, 1670, Stratford,
Fairfield, Connecticut.
Generation No. 2
2. THOMAS2 FAIRCHILD (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1610 in High Laver, England,
and died December 14, 1670
in Stratford, Fairfield,
Connecticut. He married (1) EMMA SEABROOK December 23, 1637 in Wingate, Bucks
Church Rectory, England,
daughter of ROBERT SEABROOK and ALICE GOODSPEEDE. She
died Abt. 1662. He married (2) KATHERINE CRAIG December 15, 1662 in St Stephens, Coleman
Street, London, England.
She died 1706.
Notes for THOMAS FAIRCHILD:
Notes on Thomas Fayerchild: Thomas Fayerchild, merchant came
from England
and was among the first settlers of Stratford
(now Bridgeport), Connecticut.
His wife, Sarah, was the daughter of Robert Seabrooke. She had sisters who
married Thomas Sherwook, William Preston of New
Haven, and Lt Thomas Wheeler, of Milfrod,
respectfully. All came to Connecticut
about the same time in 1638 or 1639.
After Sarah died he went back to England
for another wife, Katherine Craig, probably a sister of a neighbor in Stratford,
Connecticut. Before setting across the
ocean she extracted from Thomas a contract binding him to convey her a life
interest in his Connecticut lands, or in case of his death before her arrival
in New England, the sum of 200 pounds. (pre-nuptial
agreement December 22, 1662)
The family's religion was Congregational.

(ZACHARIAH3, THOMAS2, WILLIAM1) was born September 10, 1693 in Stratford,
Connecticut, and died May 01, 1777 in Whippany, Morris County, New
Jersey. He married ANNE SHERWOOD, daughter of MATTHEW SHERWOOD and MARY
MOREHOUSE. She was born 1691, and died April
06, 1777 in Whippany, Morris County, New Jersey.
Notes for CALEB FAIRCHILD:
The New Jersey Archives prove Caleb was in New
Jersey as early as 1730. His last grantor deed in Stratford
was 18 April 1722 (41A).
One of Caleb's descendants said he went from Stratford
to Stonington, Connecticut,
then to Hempstead, Long Island,
New York, and thence to New
Jersey. He also was briefly in the New
Haven, Connecticut area, and is
on the deeds there. On April 1, 1736,
Caleb of Hanover, Hunterdon County, New
Jersey, and wife, Anne, formerly the widow of Joseph
Trowbridge of Stratford, Connecticut,
quit-claimed land to David Trowbridge, son of the deceased Joseph Trowbridge. The inventory for Joseph Trowbridge, dated June 1, 1715, Stratford, names children, David and Anne.
Caleb's will is dated October 4, 1773. Hezekiah is not named, nor is Samuel,
who is actually a son of Alexander.

Notes for EBENEZER FAIRCHILD:
Before Ebenezer moved his family from New
Jersey to North Carolina,
he made at least two trips there and back. He kept a diary, beginning October 21, 1757. A HISTORY OF
WATAUGA COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA by John Preston Arthur gives an account on pages
87 - 96 of Ebenezer and his diary: By 1770 Ebenezer had apparently succumbed to
hard drinking and loose living, and was neglectful of his Church, for he
repented by letter and was baptized and received back into the Church (Letter
of August 23, 1771, Morristown, New Jersey). Sometime in the 1770s the family
settled in Wilkes County, North
Carolina. Ebenezer was a private in the Revolutionary
War and just missed by one day the Battle of Kings Mountain, North Carolina.
The Wilkes County North Carolina Minutes of the County Court
March 1778 - 1790, MS Vol, North Carolina Dept of Archives, show two grants
totaling 250 acres were deeded to Ebenezer in December 1779; and that Ebenezer
served on jury duty four times in 1787.
Three Forks Baptist
Church was organized on November 6, 1790. Ebenezer was #20
and Mary Fairchild was #38 on the Churches roll. He probably married his second
wife in North Carolina. Ebenezer
probably married his second wife in North Carolina.
Ebenezer died on Howards Creek,
Watauga County,
and is buried on his property. He made a will in November 1790, but it remained
unsigned.
Ebenezer Fairchild's occupation was listed as a farmer and a
Baptist Pastor of Three Forks Baptist Church, July 14, 1757; Insignee/ Captain
John Brookfields Company, August 1793; delegate / assembly at Eaton's Meeting
House, Dutchman's Creek, North Carolina.

Palm Beach, Florida in 1983.

and bought a farm which they named Shiloh Acres.
More About ANNE MARGARET FAIRCHILD:
Military service: US Army - Spec 4
Occupation: October 1975, US Postal Service, Supervisor
(transferred from WPB Sectional
Center to Nashville PDC)
Notes for WALLACE WHALEN:
In 1983, Wally retired from the Postal Service and the
Whalens moved to a farm in Alexandria,
Wilson County, Tennessee. They named their farm Shiloh Acres.
After leaving the Army with an Honorable Discharge, Ann
started with the Postal Service in 1976. She transferred from the West Palm
Beach PO to the Nashville PO and is a supervisor there.
Wally joined the Navy when he was just 17 and went right
into WW II. He was a signalman and was given the nickname "Flags".
Wally was aboard the USS Yorktown on the salvage crew when the great carrier
was torpedoed and sunk. He received a special commendation for his bravery.
Wally was a Chief Petty Officer, Signalman Corp. He served on the following
ships during WWII: USS Little Bighorn, USS Oglala; USS Charger; USS Enterprise;
USS Hornet; USS Buck; USS Detroit; USS C16498; USS New Orleans; USS Wasp; USS
Portland; USS St Louis; USS Vincennes; USS Hammon; USS Edsel; USS Roe; Lion
III; and, the USS Yorktown.
Wally tells of the time he was "loaned" to the
Coast Guard and was on patrol in Biscayne Bay, Miami,
Florida. At that time, strict blackouts
were enforced on the American coastlines. A US Navy 'tincan' sliced the Coast
Guard cutter in half. Wally had gone to sleep on the chart table and rolled off
the table into the water. He received a special pass to 'march
down Biscayne Blvd in his
skivvies', having lost all his uniforms when the cutter went down.
Another story he tells is of being arrested by the SPs for
being in the restricted women's side of the Casbah in Africa.
He was thrown in a POW camp, given a shirt with a target painted on it, and
marched up and down the compound all day to marching music from a record
player. Needless to say, he was happy to be released back to the Navy.
Wally received his discharge on September 9, 1945. (Navy service number 287 26 30) He
returned to Kentucky, where he
and his brothers, Charles and Elmo, opened Whalen Coal Company.
At a later date, Wally moved to Owensboro,
Daviess County, Kentucky.
He built his own home on Carpenters Lake
in Daviess County.
He worked as a manager at Blockers in Owensboro,
Kentucky, then
moved to Charles Todd Uniforms and Linen, first as a manager, then as a
trouble-shooter for the company.
When Wally moved his family to Tennessee,
he again remodeled and built onto the existing home himself.
