Descendants of William Hartwell
Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM1 HARTWELL was born 1613 in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England, and died March 12, 1690/91 in Concord, MA. He married JAZAN HARTWELL Abt. 1636.
Williams's name does not appear on any passenger list. He is assumed to be part of Capt. Simon Willard's party. He appeared in Concord in 1636 with 9 acres of land. He was made a freeman of the colony on May 18, 1642. On Oct. 18, 1659, with four other men, he petitioned the General court for assistance in maintaining bridges across the Concord River. With Timothy Wheeler he was road overseer in the west quarter in 1663-64. In 1666 he was a larger land holder, with 157 acres of land "be they more or less" in twenty separately described tracts. In 1672 he was one of a committee of nine citizens appointed to frame rules for the guidance of the selectman of the town. He was appointed corporal of th 2d troop of horse for Middlesex County in 1671.

Generation No. 2
2. SAMUEL2 HARTWELL ( WILLIAM1) was born January 26, 1644/45 in Concord, Massachusetts, and died July 26, 1725 in Lincoln, Massachusetts. He married (1) RUTH WHEELER. He married (2) REBECCA MEADS. He married (3) ELIZABETH (Proctor) FLETCHER February 07, 1722/23.
Samuel served in the war against the Indians under the
leadership of Philip of Pokanoket, his name appearing in the list of those to
whom, or their descendants, lands were granted in 1735, the share allotted for
his services passing to his grandson, Ephriam. It seems likely that he was one
of those who made the "hungry march" against the stronghold of
Philip, and to whom a land gratuity was specially granted, as the name of his
brother, John, known to have been out in that war, does not appear among the
grantees of land in 1735. He undoubtedly settled near his father at marriage,
lived nearer him at his death than John, but nothing yet appears to indicate
with certainty whether it was he or his son, Samuel, who settled on the lands
in the present bounds of Lincoln, since held by his descendants until 1875.

The youngest son, he remained on the homestead, caring for
his father, was residuary legatee of the wills of his aunt Ruth and his father,
and therefore was looked upon with a jealous eye by members of the other
branches of the family. In his will, made in 1786, be bequeath a slave, Violet,
to his widow. This bequest, however, in nowise contravened the spirit of the
law or of the courts, as it was in point of fact, a fitting provision for an
old and faithful family servant. He received in 1735 the share of the
Narragansett lands allotted as compensation for his grandfather's services in
King Philip's war. He lived on the homestead of his father, which fell just
over the line in Lincoln when that town was set off from Concord, and kept a
tavern on the detour formerly made by the Bay road to the left of its present
course, a little to the eastward of the Brooks tavern, later occupied by his great-grandson,
Samuel Hartwell.

John Bryant was studious and thoughtful as a boy and the
comfortable circumstances of his parents enabled him to acquire what he eagerly
sought, an excellent education. At the age of twenty-one he went to Providence
and prepared to enter college with some thought of ultimately entering the Christian
ministry. Duty seemed to call him elsewhere, and he found employment in the
store of James H. Read, where his upright manly bearing, his courteous
demeanor, and his conscientious devotion to his duties won his unusual respect.
Advancing rapidly in his business, a few years later he started for himself in
a small store in the Arcade under the name of Hartwell and Cragin. After
changing his quarters here several times, it became necessary for him to seek
more commodious accommodations, and several years afterwards he moved into the
building on Weybosset St., later occupied by Hartwell and Richards, where he
laid the foundations of the subsequently prosperous business of that
influential firm. Beginning under the name of Hartwell, Dudley & Co., as
the business increased, new partners were taken in, Mr. Dudley having obtained
a position elsewhere, until the house assumed the name of Hartwell, Richards
& Co., at one time the oldest and largest wholesale dry goods house in
Providence. He was a life long member and deacon of the Central Baptist Church,
and for the last few years of his life a trustee of Brown University.
